Preparation for the study
General
- The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.
- The test material is blood.
- The test should always be performed at the same time of day, preferably in the morning.
Description
TSH is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the function of the thyroid gland
and the production of thyroid hormone T3 and T4. Significance of the test: assessment of the functional state of the thyroid gland.
TSH shows high biological variability related to the diurnal rhyme of secretion.
It reaches its highest concentrations in the morning, which decrease gradually over time.
The lowest concentrations are observed between 18:00 and 22:00.
Therefore, the TSH test should be reported in the morning, patients monitoring treatment are advised to perform subsequent tests at a fixed time.
